Gold Rate Basics
What is the gold rate today?
Today (Wednesday, 12 August 2026) 24K gold is about ₹14,940 per gram and 22K about ₹13,695 per gram in India. Ten grams of 22K costs around ₹1,36,953. Check our home page for live rates and your city for the local price.
Why does the gold rate change every day?
Gold is traded globally 24 hours a day in US dollars. The Indian rate moves with the international spot price, the rupee–dollar exchange rate, import duty and 3% GST. Because the first two change every second, the rate is revised daily and sometimes intraday.
Who decides the gold rate in India?
No single body fixes it. Bullion associations and jewellers set daily rates based on the international benchmark (London/COMEX) converted to rupees, plus local duty, taxes and margins.
Is the gold rate the same all over India?
Almost — differences are only a few rupees per gram between cities, caused by local transport, octroi/GST handling and dealer margins. South Indian cities are often marginally higher.
What time is the gold rate updated?
Jewellers usually publish an opening rate in the morning and may revise once or twice as global markets move. Our rates refresh automatically every day.
Purity & Karat
What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 18K gold?
24K is 99.9% pure gold (softest, for coins/bars). 22K is 91.6% pure (the Indian jewellery standard). 18K is 75% pure (durable, for studded and modern designs). Higher purity = higher price per gram.
What is 916 gold?
916 simply means 22 carat — 91.6% pure gold. A "916 hallmark" stamp certifies BIS 22K jewellery.
What is 21K gold and where is it used?
21K is 87.5% pure and very popular in the Gulf (UAE, Saudi, Qatar). It balances richness and durability. See our UAE and Saudi pages.
Which gold purity is best to buy?
24K coins/bars or a Sovereign Gold Bond for investment; 22K for traditional jewellery; 18K for daily-wear, studded or lightweight pieces.
How do I check gold purity at home?
You cannot reliably test purity at home. Rely on the BIS hallmark and HUID, and buy from hallmarked showrooms. A jeweller can do a karat-meter (XRF) test.
Units & Weight
What is 1 pavan / 1 sovereign of gold?
1 pavan (also called sovereign) equals 8 grams, used mainly in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Today 8g of 22K gold is about ₹1,09,562.
What is 1 tola of gold?
1 tola equals 11.66 grams, used across North India, Pakistan and the Gulf. Multiply the per-gram rate by 11.66 for the tola price.
How many grams is 1 ounce of gold?
1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams. International gold is quoted per troy ounce in US dollars.
What is 1 bhori / bhari?
Bhori (Bengal) and bhari are traditional names for a tola, about 11.66 grams.
Making Charges & GST
What are making charges?
The labour/design cost a jeweller adds to the metal value, charged as a percentage (usually 8–25%) or a flat rate per gram. They are negotiable and vary by design complexity.
How much GST is charged on gold?
3% GST on the gold value, plus 3% GST on the making charges. Our calculator and bill generator include both.
How is the final price of gold jewellery calculated?
Final price = (gold rate × weight) + making charges + 3% GST on (gold + making). Use our calculator to see the exact breakdown before you buy.
Can I negotiate making charges?
Yes. Making charges are the most negotiable part of the bill, especially on plain gold and during festival offers. The metal rate itself is fixed for the day.
Hallmark & HUID
What is BIS hallmarking?
A certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards guaranteeing the gold's purity. Since 2021 it is mandatory for gold jewellery sold in India.
What is HUID?
A 6-digit Hallmark Unique Identification code stamped on each hallmarked item since 2023. No HUID means the piece is not BIS-certified. Verify it in the BIS CARE app.
How do I verify a hallmark?
Look for the BIS logo, the purity grade (22K916 / 18K750 / 24K999) and the HUID, then check the HUID in the free BIS CARE app.
Gold Loans
How much loan can I get against gold?
Banks and NBFCs lend up to about 75% of the gold's value (RBI cap). Try our gold loan estimator with today's rate.
Is 24K or 22K used for gold loan valuation?
Lenders value the pure-gold content, so purity matters. Studded stones and impurities are excluded from the weight considered.
What documents are needed for a gold loan?
Typically ID and address proof; the gold itself is the collateral. Requirements vary by lender and amount.
Investing in Gold
What is the best way to invest in gold?
For long-term wealth, Sovereign Gold Bonds (2.5% interest, tax-free at maturity) are the most efficient. Digital gold suits small flexible savings; gold ETFs suit traders; physical gold suits gifting and wearing.
Is it a good time to buy gold?
Gold is a long-term hedge, not a short-term bet. Check the 10-day trend on our home page, compare options, and buy in line with your goal rather than timing the exact bottom.
What is a Sovereign Gold Bond?
An RBI-issued bond denominated in grams of gold that pays 2.5% annual interest and is tax-free on maturity, with no making charges or storage. See the full guide.
Is digital gold safe?
The gold is real and vault-insured, but providers are not RBI-regulated like SGBs. Use established platforms. See the digital gold guide.
Selling & Taxes
How is gold taxed when I sell?
Profit is taxed as capital gains — short-term gains at your slab rate, long-term under the applicable long-term rules. SGB gains are tax-free if held to maturity. Keep your purchase invoice.
Will I get today's rate when I sell my old gold?
You get the day's rate on the pure-gold content, minus a small deduction for melting/impurity and any making charge is not refunded. Compare offers between jewellers.
Do I pay GST when selling gold back?
Selling your personal gold to a jeweller is generally not a GST event for you; GST applies when you buy new jewellery.
Silver
What is the silver rate today?
Silver is about ₹217 per gram today (Wednesday, 12 August 2026). Silver is usually bought by the kilogram; see our home page for per-100g and per-kg prices.
What is the gold-to-silver ratio?
It is how many grams of silver equal one gram of gold in price. Investors use it to judge whether gold or silver is relatively cheap.
International & Sellers
Is gold cheaper in Dubai or abroad?
Gold tracks the same global price everywhere; differences come from currency, VAT/duty and margins. The UAE's low tax on investment gold makes it competitive. See gold rate by country.
Can I make a gold bill or invoice online?
Yes — our free gold bill generator lets jewellers create an official invoice with their brand, live rates, making charges and GST/VAT in any supported currency.
How do I avoid gold-buying scams?
Buy only hallmarked gold with a HUID, get an itemised bill showing rate, weight, making and GST, verify the day's rate against our page, and prefer established sellers.
