What Drives the Silver Rate in India?
Silver, like gold, is priced from the international spot market in US dollars per troy ounce, converted into rupees and adjusted for import duty and 3% GST. But silver has a split personality: it is both a precious metal that investors buy as a store of value and an industrial metal used heavily in electronics, solar panels and electric vehicles. That industrial demand makes silver more volatile than gold — its price can swing faster on changes in manufacturing and technology demand.
Indian buyers purchase silver as coins, bars, utensils and jewellery, and especially around festivals such as Dhanteras and Akshaya Tritiya. Because silver is far cheaper per gram than gold, it is usually bought by the 100 grams or kilogram. Today silver is about ₹217 per gram, or ₹2,16,620 per kilogram. As with gold, insist on a proper bill and buy hallmarked or reputed-brand silver for guaranteed purity (fine silver is 999).
Gold-to-silver ratio
The gold-to-silver ratio — today about 69.0 to 1 — is the number of grams of silver that equal the price of one gram of gold. Investors watch it to decide which metal looks relatively cheap: a historically high ratio suggests silver may be undervalued versus gold, and vice versa.
